sock patterns and wool weight

Hello my name is Lynne and I'm new to this site but can someone out there please help me I am trying to find a pattern for knitting socks and can't seem to find a suitable one in yarn that I know. I downloaded one from the internet but it uses Worsted yarn and I've never heard of it could someone please explain what exactly it is.
