avoiding "steps" on shoulder and seam shaping

Forgive me if you all do this but I only found this tip in the last 6 months.

At shoulder and set in sleeve tops.
IF pattern says e.g.
shape shoulder/sleeve by casting off 9 stitches at beginning of next 4 rows,then 8 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows.cast off remaining x stitches.
TRy knitting 2 stitches together at the end of the preceding rows.You then cast off one less at the beginning of the rows.
This combined with previous tip would,I think,give really neat shoulders etc.
