Sirdar Firefly - NOW ONLINE BY THE BALL

Post by admin »

We have just heard a rumour that Sirdar are bringing back out Firefly. [NOW ONLINE]

Of all the fashion yarns they have discontinued over the last few years, this is the one that sold out the quickest.

What do you all think?

Should we stock it by the ball or in pre-order packs?

Do you use if for other things than knitted garments? We have heard that some people use it for jewelery.

I've never used it, though my sister has sold many scarves made from it. I like the idea of using it for jewellery though and in that case I'd prefer to see it sold by the ball.

Hi

Like Janine I have not used Firefly but I know some of the past patterns and they mostly were for shrugs and wraps that only used about 3 balls so by the ball seems most sensible.
Also it was quite expensive (one reason I haven't used it) so again a pack might not be popular.

OK - so by the ball seems most sensible. But we really don't want to be left with a lot of a 'fashion' yarn that can only be used for the patterns that Sirdar produce :(

One other option we have is to do the same as we have for the new Sirdar Salsa yarn. That is used mainly for scarves and garment edging so only a ball at a time is needed. We have put that yarn online in Pre-order BALLS. Therefore (like the pattern leaflets) when someone orders from us we order a pack from Sirdar - sell the one ball to that customer (when it comes in) and keep the other 5 for the next customer. This means the most we will have in stock is 5 balls in each of the 10 colours - but in practise much much less.

If we used the above approach we would only be getting in stock the most popular colours. The only down side is if the dye lots changed very quickly we may be left with lots of odd balls.

We have been given by Sirdar the following info - the original 6 shades will be back along with 6 new shades with a "sensational" metallic thread. They will be 50g balls with just 6 balls per pack. The info we have also says it is "much, much softer" than many other ladder yarns and "this softness creates gorgeously delicate, drapey designs"

There will be 6 leaflets but I think some may be the old designs but with the photography given a make over. There will be 3 "easy-to-knit scarves" including one which only takes one ball. It looks like they are expecting it to be about £5.00 a ball.

Guess we will have to wait and see what the pattern leaflets actually are and how many balls they take.

Do you think the Pre-order Balls is a good compromise or not - please let us know.

We just had our monthly visit from the Sirdar Rep and saw the Firefly in the flesh. The new colours, with the additional metallic thread, look very nice. The patterns are mainly re-makes of the existing patterns but with the ball amounts amended to take account of the new 50g size rather than the old 25g ball size.

We WILL be getting this in by the ball but we will not be holding much stock of it - only 2 or 3 packs - so occasionally there may be a delay if a colour is popular. However we have heard that 4 colours are already out of stock at Sirdar so not sure which ones we will get in our first delivery next week.

Please continue to give us feedback on this, either on here or via email.
